6.3.2010 | Skogarorka ehf – First Forest Energy Enterprise in Iceland

Northern Periphery Programme projects, Northern WoodHeat and PELLETime have resulted to spin-off of a new company, Skogarorka ehf, the first forest-energy company in Iceland. Company was founded in January 2009 and has since established a 500 KWh boiler house in Hallormsstadur East Iceland. Since November 2009 Skogarorka ehf has produced renewable heating for two schools, a swimming pool and a guest house in Hallormsstadur, 25 km south of the town Egilsstadir in Eastern Iceland. Later on it is planned to connect residential houses in the village to the heating network.

The heating plant is first of its kind in Iceland and is placed in Hallormsstadur national forest, the biggest and most famous forest in Iceland. In the regime of the NPP projects, Northern WoodHeat and PELLETime, a detailed feasibility case study was undertaken. Both Icelandic and Finnish specialists have gathered necessary information and made recommendations on fuel availability, supply chain structures, production costs and heating demand, supporting the establishment of this pilot boiler in Hallormsstadur.
